Scarbro
In 1899, Samuel Dixon built the White Oak Railway, which at first extended from Glen Jean to Carlisle. This extension opened mines at Wingrove, Scarbro, Whipple, Oakwood and Carlisle. A further extension of the railroad to Stuart allowed the mines at Summerlee (Parral) and Lochgelly (Stuart) to ship coal out of their mines.Samuel Dixon named Scarbro for a town in Yorkshire, England. The store. built around 1905, carried one of the most complete stocks of general merchandise to be found in the area. The first company store for Scarbro was opened in a small building in 1899 and was replaced, by the one pictured above. W. C. Bishop was made manager in February 1919 and retained that position until 1953.Scarbro had an amusement hall that housed several businesses to serve the community; a theatre, barber shop, pool room and drug store. The company store and post office were located nearby.
